Soccer

I had a special experience with Tiana this last week.

We were getting our things together for the kids last soccer game of the season. We were all smiles and excited for the last game. However, as we were leaving the house, Tiana got sad. I knelt down and asked what's wrong. She expressed how she hasn't scored a goal yet. Saia has scored a goal twice, so I could see her disappointment. I quickly fixed that frown and said, lets go early to the game so you can get extra practice in. That made her happy, and soon we left the house and were on the field.

Right as the game was starting, she got nervous. She came to me and thought she wouldn't be able to. Doing what I thought was best, I said, Tia, lets say a prayer! We prayed that she'd be able to have fun and that if possible, she could score a goal. She gave me a big hug after and a thumbs up as she ran back onto the field.

As the game went on, sweet Tia had not scored yet. I thought, well as long as she has fun, then our prayer is answered.

The game ended and still no goal. Later we had a chance to talk about it once we got home.

I felt inspired to tell her that part of soccer isn't actually scoring. But also needs to be a lot of defense. I was really hoping that would work, but honestly didn't know what to say.

To my surprise, she beamed! She said, oh yeah! I blocked the pink team from scoring a lot and kicked the ball away from them! She was exactly right!! She had really played amazing defense all game and that's just as important as scoring a goal!

She ran off and was happy and anytime someone asked her about soccer, she'd tell them how good she is at keeping the ball away from the other team.

I think this taught me about following the spirit and looking for inspiration before answering. Of course when my daughter comes to me with a problem like, I haven't scored a goal, I want to fix it and make that hope happen. But luckily the spirit knows her better and knows what she did. I didn't know that she had played good defense. She mentioned that and then I could see it in all the videos I recorded after. But truly, I didn't know that at the time. It was just an inspired thought that I shared.

I'm grateful that my children are patient with me as I learn how to be a good mom and following the spirit. God knows everything. We need to trust Him more than ourselves.
